What’s a Moka Pot?
There is something romantic about Moka pot brewing rich espresso. It has been a worldwide favourite and it still is. A Moka pot is an appliance in which it uses pressure to brew coffee. Coffee coming out of the Moka pot is usually 2-3 times as concentrated as a regular drip coffee. It's intense, bold and it has a heavy body.
When it comes to Moka pot construction, really only two materials are used: aluminium and stainless steel. Both are suitable for making delicious coffee, but the two materials have differences elsewhere. Here we are going to identify the best Moka pot for you.
Considerations when choosing Moka pots:
Capacity:
Moka pots indicate their capacities in cups, but these are small two-ounce demitasse cups rather than standard eight-ounce cups. Most Moka pots come in a few different sizes: 1-cup, 3-cup, 6-cup, 9/10-cup, and 12-cup. Coffee goes into the pot is strong enough to dilute like espresso, so a little coffee goes a long way
Material:
Traditionally Moka pots are made of Aluminium as it can distribute the heat evenly whereas stainless steel is a newer metal type which has been quite famous because of its non-porous and non-corrosive form. Stainless steel is a more durable material. It is going to hold up to a long time whereas aluminium can be banged up in a very short time. Stainless steel cannot conduct the heat as efficiently as aluminium but it is a tiny bit safer to use on the health side as aluminium can impart small amounts of particles into coffee if the pot is not well seasoned. Aluminium pots are a lot lighter and cheaper than steel so they are easier to handle and afford.
What type of Moka pot tastes better?
There is no specific reason to say which pot tastes better but one of the most significant complaints from people using aluminium pot is that at high heat it imparts metallic tastes into the coffee produced. Research says it is safe for human consumption but the flavour is impacted badly. Stainless steel has no complaints of that but steel causes hotspots due to uneven heat which is one reason why stainless is not preferred.
Manual VS Electric
Moka pots are usually not easy to use. There is a learning curve involved as one has to learn about how to control temperature and grind size. Electric Moka pot is easier to use. You just have to plug the outlet and have a temperature regulator which means you only have to find the grind size. Price of an electric Moka is higher than a manual Moka pot.
Moka pots are incredible devices, and frankly, you cannot go wrong. Yes, there will be a learning curve and sometimes it’s frustrating to not be able to brew different amounts of coffee with the same pot, but it’s worth it for the delicious coffee.
